Punch originated in India 1,500 years ago. Then it was called Panj, a Hindi word meaning five, because it had five ingredients: citrus juice, water, arrack, sugar and spices. By the end of the 17th century it had made its way to the British Isles, where is was known as the drink of sailors, and it was a hit in India, and later America.
